Well that's a very good question. Typical answer, 'why not'? And why not? They seemed to be a perfectly logical couple. But yes there are problems with it... But then you can point any problems with any couple choices whether you are talking about couples from an anime or a television show or even in real life. Please if you are not a Gourry/Sylphiel supporter, I urge you not to read this. It's not going to do you any good reading some fanatic bullshit that a crazed Gourry/Sylphiel supporter ranted off for a whole page. LOL! Yes I'm making fun of myself. But seriously read this with an open mind and don't get angry with me for saying my peace. I'm trying to type this reason page without sounding too much like a bigot.
Reasons against:
But let's get over the obvious reason which is probably going through most of your minds right now. [espically if you are an unfortunte cannon supporter whom has by accident stumbled upon this place. And yes I know my spelling sucks you don't need to point that out to me.] The biggest reason of course of why not, is Gourry/Sylphiel isn't a cannon couple. So what, does it have it be for people to make couple fandom? No, and if it really does matter to you that much then why are you even here in the first place? I never did understand why people go to websites that go against their bias. Wouldn't that only accomplish pissing you off? Oopps. I'm getting off topic here. Sorry. Now where was I? Oh yes g/s is not a cannon. But the fact remains Sylphiel is 'in love' [and I use that term loosely] with Gourry even if he doesn't. And don't start that whole Gourry loves Lina thing, because one could also say they have a brother/sister relationship. So I'm not going to get into that.
Second reason not in favor of the couple is that Gourry doesn't love Sylphiel back. Do we know this for certain? No an it's an anime and a manga, they are not real people. It's all creative perception. And plus is Gourry even capable of understanding love as it is if he was a real person? Who knows. Unless you can point out a passage of dialogue where Gourry states he doesn't care for Sylphiel in the slightest then you can't really say he doesn't give a damn about her. It might not be highly likely, but you still can't say he doesn't.
Third reason 'Gourry loves Lina'. Alright I have to get into this one. We know from the series that they have a bond but would it last if they ever got to the point of a real comitment? Don't know. Does he love her? Well was it ever said that he loves her in the show or the manga? [and I'm seriously asking that question but I haven't had the oportunity to read the manga or see all of Slayers the anime. Though I'm in the process of getting the rest of the anime. And I'm halfway through NEXT if you are wondering. And yes I do know what's coming up at the end of NEXT too.] Of course you could justify the statement that he loves her by actions he's done. *nods head* Yes I would agree he loves Lina. But it could be as a lover or as a sister. More creative perception.
Fourth reason, their personalities wouldn't match well. Yes I agree with that to some extent. In some ways the two of them are too similar. And plus there's the whole thing with Gourry being a yogurt for brains. Any anti Gourry supporter would say that Gourry is too stupid to know what the hell love is. I don't think he's hopeless though he is a bit of a slow character. Which is what makes it hard to write fics with him and get his character accurate. Or rather any Gourry fics with a bias with him in it. I find a lot of the time he's done totally out of character, but then he's a hard character to write.
Reasons for:
Sylphiel loves Gourry. We know this because she has stated this. Thus the posibilty is out there of them being a couple. Doesn't mean it would but it could. But that's provided that he cares for her back and that's still yet to be determinded.
I'm going to use an example for this one. Gourry had said to Sylphiel that Gourry wished Lina was more like her. [somewhat implying that Sylphiel is more his type.] But then he lives for food so why not? He loves food she loves to cook. [boy at these for reasons are turning pretty lame...]
Their personalities can complement each other. Which is true they can. Sylphiel is a very even-tempered paient character. Gourry is slow and has a tendency to say things that might piss someone off. So in that respect they can match. Sylphiel is shy and sweet, Gourry is strong, dumb and brave. No personality clashes there. But you could make the argument that they are both too introverted characters. I don't know if I would call Gourry introverted myself, he tends to say whatever's on his mind and he's not shy about things. Sylphiel is a bit introverted so they do kinda complement each other that way. But when it comes to who would take the lead in the relationship, who knows? This is a flaw with this couple. But then it could work out that they would both lead the relationship equally. Or it could end up with them both not knowing what to do. And with Gourry being slow and Sylphiel being shy this is a problem. *shrugs* Yeah it ain't perfect, but that's just what makes it fun. It's more of a challenge to write fics on it.
