Original Storyline of ‘The Legend of Zelda’:
You are in a place called Hyrule. Once a peaceful land it’s turned into a valley of evil. Monsters are everywhere and people have gone into hiding. Evil prince of darkness Gannon has kidnapped Princess Zelda the keeper of the Triforce of Wisdom. He has the Triforce of Power. The Triforce is an icon of golden power that whomever has it can rule the land with it’s influence. The Triforce of Wisdom has been separated into 8 pieces and locked away in 8 dungeons protected by 8 monster bosses. You, Link, a fearless swordsmen dressed in green must collect the pieces of the Triforce, defeat Gannon and save Princess Zelda!
Now I’ve changed some of this for the purposes of my fanfic. First of all here are the casting:
Link ~ Gourry [gotta admit they look pretty similar…]
Princess Zelda ~ Sylphiel
Gannon ~ Xellos
Jinx [an original fairy character of mine] ~ Amelia
Hyrule King ~ Erik [Sylphiel’s father]
Also instead of 8 pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom I’ve got 7. And all of the dungeons will be elemental. Plus I’ve changed Link/Gourry’s attire a wee bit… heh heh. Oh and the original game didn’t have the Triforce of Courage in it, at the time the game was made there was only two. But to make things fun I’ve put the Triforce of Courage in it. Though when you read the fic I’ll go into a very in depth explanation of the Triforce.
Okay so here are some of the races you’ll find in a typical Zelda game:
Hylians - People of Hyrule. They look like humans but with elfish ears.
Fairies - Little pixy like creatures with wings and magical powers. They live usually near wooded areas with lakes.
Kokoris - Also called children of the forest, the Kokori live deep in the woods. They are elf like people that seem to forever look like children. That or they age much more slowly. All Kokori have fairy companions that act as guides and advisors.
Gorons - Rock like creatures, Gorons live in the mountain ranges of Death Mountain. They are large with big round bellies and big eyes. Usually they are pretty jolly people they can roll into balls when scared or to defend themselves.
Zoras - Fish like creatures that live in the sea. They can swim great lengths, breathe underwater and dive deep into the water.
Gerudos - A band of thieves that live in the dessert areas. Gerudos are usually female [there are never too many Gerudo males, most Gerudo children are female] and they have dark tanned skin and usually bright reddish hair. They don’t usually trust many people outside their kind and have been known to do very criminal things.
As it stands I don’t have Lina, Zelgadis, Filia, Val and so on in the fic. The only ones planned are already mentioned above. Though that might change.
Now to explain some Zeldaish type things. In the original game when Link is at full power and swings his sword a beam of light shoots out from his sword. This is equivalent to one physical strike of the sword. During the course of the game Link has three swords:
The Wooden Sword - What Link starts off with. A strike from this sword is only worth about one shot. This sword is given to Link by an old man in a cave right where he starts his quest.
The White Sword - A sword with a white blade. With the white sword one strike is the same as two strikes with the wooden sword. This sword Link gets from another old man in a cave. But he can’t get it unless he’s gotten strong enough to use it. Basically meaning he’s got enough heart cases. [also see heart cases below.] This is what Gourry starts off with in my fic.
The Master Sword - The final sword that Link gets in the original Zelda. Like the white sword he can’t use it till he has gotten enough heart cases. A strike from this sword is like three strikes with the wooden sword.
Strangely enough when you kill an enemy it disappears. Where it goes? Who knows…
Items you’ll find in the original Legend of Zelda:
Link’s swords [see above]
Small Shield/Magic Shield - The small shield is what Link starts off with. It works well enough to deflect attacks from like arrows and such but does nothing to block things like fireballs. But with the magic shield Link can deflect fireballs and other enemy projectiles. In order to get the magic shield, Link must buy it from a merchant, and unless you hunt around for the cheaper shop it’s not exactly the cheapest thing to have to buy.
Heart Cases - In Legend of Zelda your health is displayed in a heart like meter on the top right hand corner of your screen. You start off with 3 heart cases. During the course of the game you find more of these that add to your combined health. From a weaker enemy, one hit from them would take off ½ of one of your heart containers. If you loose all your health, you die. So having as many heart cases as you can is a good thing. Also once you get a certain number of heart cases you are able to get the more powerful swords. And if you’re at full health when you swing with your sword a beam of light will shoot out from it.
Green Rupee/Blue Rupee - In this game rupees are the currency. And the max amount of rupees you can carry at a time in the original Zelda is 255 rupees. To get rupees it’s quite simple; kill enemies. When enemies die sometimes they leave items behind. Some of the things you can get are arrows, bombs, hearts, red fairies as well as rupees. Green rupees are worth one, while blue rupees are worth five rupees.
Hearts - When enemies sometimes die they leave little hearts. These little hearts can be used to fill up your heart cases with health. One small heart is enough to fill one heart case.
Red Fairies - You find red fairies two ways. Either you find them at ponds and they heal your entire health or if you release them after you kill an enemy. Though the red fairies at the ponds can fully recharge you, the red fairies you get in a fight only partially charge your health up. I think it was six heart cases worth.
Keys/Master Key - When you are in dungeons the only way to get past a locked door is with a key. You get keys in dungeons and they can be used on any dungeon lock. Mainly you get keys through solving puzzles and defeating enemies in dungeons. Though can buy keys in a certain store. But if you do the dungeons correctly you shouldn’t need to buy any keys. The master key is something you only get the in final dungeon, Gannon’s lair. This key allows you to open any dungeon lock and you can use it as many times as you’d like. You can’t get this key early, in order to get it you must go through the last dungeon. But you can’t enter the last dungeon until you have all the pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom.
Blue Candle/Red Candle - The blue candle is one of the first things you can buy. It’s in a shop just a few screens over from where you start. What you use the candles for in this game is to burn down bushes and light up dark rooms in dungeons. Under certain bushes if you burn them you can find secret passages that can lead to things like shops, heart cases, dungeons and even people who will give you money. (“It’s a secret to everybody.”) Though sometimes you can also find angry people who want you to pay for the damage to their door. The red candle does the same thing as the blue candle except for one thing. With the blue candle you can only use it once per screen. If you want to try and burn down all the bushes in a certain area you can’t just go and try to burn them all. You can only burn one bush and if you want to burn more you have to go to another area, come back to the area you were in and then you can burn another bush. But again you can only burn one bush at a time per screen. It’s pretty annoying but you really need the candle. During one of the dungeons [usually like the 5th or 6th or later on] you find the red candle. The red candle is like the blue candle only instead of burning one thing at one time per screen you can use it as many times as you’d like. But I wouldn’t advise waiting till you get the red candle and not bother with the blue candle. You’ll miss heart cases you could have gotten at the beginning.
Bombs - Along with the many items you can buy bombs is one of them. They usually cost around twenty rupees and I think you get like four of them at a time. You can get them by either buying them or getting them from enemies when you kill them. But it’s pretty random what items you get when you kill enemies. But usually if you fight moblins you’ll get bombs or arrows more likely then you would fighting an octorok. What you use bombs for is for two things. One to attack enemies (set it off and the blast hurts enemies around it) or to bomb secret passages. Some dungeons require you to bomb open a secret entrance to a room instead of going through a door. Dodongos, dinosaur like monster can only be killed by the usage of bombs.
Red Boomerang/Blue Boomerang - Usually you find the red boomerang in like the second dungeon and it’s pretty useful. What the boomerang does is if you hit enemies with it they are temporarily stunned. It doesn’t take off any of their health but it does make them freeze for a little while. Except for really weak enemies such as gels and keeses, they die with one shot from the boomerang. Plus you can use the boomerang to pick up items that are away from you. The blue boomerang is something you also get in a dungeon but which dungeon it is varies with which quest you are playing. It does the same thing as the red boomerang only it can go farther distances.
Bow/Arrows/Silver Arrows - Arrows are one of the things you can buy at the beginning of the game, but even if you buy the arrows you can’t use them. Because of course what good is an arrow without a bow? Basically you buy the arrows but you have to wait till you find the bow in one of the dungeons before you can use them. The bow and arrows can be used as a weapon just like your sword. I’m not sure how much health though. Certain enemies can only be killed by arrows. Like a Gohma. Another is a pol’s voice whom you can kill with your sword [though it takes many strikes by your sword] but it only takes one shot of an arrow to kill. Arrows aren’t something you find in this game. Once you buy one in a shop you don’t need to get anymore. How does this work? Well in the original Zelda, every time you shot an arrow you loose a rupee. It wastes rupees rather then actual arrows themselves. In the final dungeon you’ll find the silver arrows. These are very special arrows that you need in order to kill Gannon. I don’t know if they take off more health then regular arrows but you can shoot two arrows for the price of one. Meaning you have to shoot two before you loose one rupee.
Letter/Blue Potion/Red Potion - During the course of the game you’ll meet an old man that will give you a letter and he will tell you to take it to the old woman. If you do so [I believe there is like two or three old women you could take it to] and you take it to one of the old ladies that don’t speak you when you go to talk to them show them this letter. What happens is that the lady will offer to sell you a potion. You can only carry one potion at a time. A blue potion is good to heal all of your health once. Where as a red potion will heal your entire health twice.
Power Bracelet - There are four secret passage/’warp’ spots in the game. In order to use this warp system you must find the power bracelet. It will allow you to move certain things that you couldn’t before and will take you to the passage where you can go to one of the four secret passage spots.
Blue Ring/Red Ring - What the rings do is act as reflective armor. The blue ring is something that you can get at the beginning of the game. You just need to find the shop that sells it. Unfortunately it isn’t cheep. You’re max amount of rupees that you can carry at a time is 255, and well the blue ring costs 250 rupees. If it’s so expensive then why bother? Well if you get the blue ring it cuts the normal amount of damage inflicted by enemies to half. Basically if an enemy takes off a full heart case’s worth of health with the blue ring it will only take off half a heart case. When Link wears the blue ring he goes from being dressed in his green outfit to a white outfit. The red ring is like the blue ring only it cuts the damage inflicted to even less. [to a ¼ I believe] When wearing the red ring Link’s outfit turns to red. The red ring is something you can only find in the final dungeon. And like with the master key you can’t get it until you have all pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom.
Meat - Yes there is meat in this game. It’s something you can buy and something that you need to buy. In one of the dungeons [two if you are playing the second quest] you’ll encounter a monster blocking the way to a door. All he says is ‘Grumble Grumble’ [whether or not that’s him talking or his stomach]. What you do is give him the meat, he goes away and you can go on your merry way.
Raft - The raft is something you get in one of the dungeons. What it allows you to do is to sail over the water from a raft port place. It’s useful for two things. One to find one of the dungeons and the other is to get a heart case.
Ladder - You find the ladder in one of the dungeons. What you use it for is to let you go over small areas of water. Like a little river. Link puts the ladder down over the water and walks across to the other side.
Flute - The flute has two purposes. One purpose is to warp you from defeated dungeon to defeated dungeon. The other is to get you into a dungeon. Most ponds or springs have fairies in them. If you come to one that doesn’t you play your flute and a secret passage appears which is one of the dungeons.
Magic Wand - You find the magic wand in one of the dungeons. It shoots a magical blast.
Book of Magic - The book of magic works in conjunction with the magic wand. You find it in you guessed it a dungeon. What it does is that it adds a fire bit to that magical blast from the magical wand.
With monsters in the Hyrule there are two types, land dwelling and underworld monsters. Land dwelling monsters only live above on the land where as underworld monsters dwell in the dungeons below ground.
Some monsters will have more then one version of it. A red version and a blue version. The red versions of monsters are always weaker then the blue versions. Also the blue versions take off more health when they hit you and they require more hits to kill. All monsters with a red and a blue version will be marked with a * next to their name.

Hopefully I've answered all the questions you may have. I haven't yet posted how many shots it takes to kill each enemy though I will once I figure them all out.
